DOT HAZMAT

The DOT HAZMAT General Awareness course from Contingency Training fulfills the mandatory general awareness/familiarization training requirements under 49 CFR §172.704(a)(1) of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR). This foundational training is required for all hazmat employees — individuals who in any way affect the safe transportation of hazardous materials in commerce — to build basic familiarity with the HMR, enable recognition and identification of hazardous materials, and promote overall safety awareness in compliance with federal standards.

Core topics covered focus on essential awareness-level content, including:

• Overview of the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) and their purpose in protecting health, safety, property, and the environment during transportation.

• Recognition and identification of hazardous materials, including the hazard classification system (classes and divisions).

• Introduction to the Hazardous Materials Table (49 CFR §172.101) and how to use it to determine if a material is regulated.

• Basic understanding of hazard communication elements, such as proper marking, labeling, and placarding requirements.

• Awareness of packaging, shipping papers, segregation, and emergency response basics.

• Security awareness to recognize potential risks and threats associated with hazardous materials transportation.

• Incident reporting obligations and general safety responsibilities.

This course emphasizes broad knowledge applicable to all hazmat employees rather than detailed, job-specific procedures (function-specific training can be added separately as needed).Contingency Training customizes this General Awareness course to align with your organization's needs.
